Essay #3

An immigrant is a person who migrates to another country. There are basically two types of immigration. One is short-term and the other is long-term. To be able to visit another country or live in one you need a green card (immigrant visa ). To get one the government must approve a petition filed by employer or a relative. When you get one you are able to work, travel back and forth, bring in a spouse and children and become eligible for citizenship after 5 years of residence. There are many different types of immigrant visa; there are tourist, student, business, fiance, and work. The tourist visa allow you to visit as a tourist or for medical treatment. Restriction are that you are not allow to get pay. A student visa allow you to is to attend colleges, universities, conservatories, or academic high schools in the country. The purpose of the business visa to travel for business purposes (buying goods, attempting seminars or performing other works for an employer). Restriction is that you can not be self-employ and the visit is temporary. The fiance visa allow the person to visit another country for 90 days and they have to get married. The requirement is that both people are single, intent to get married, and be over the legal age. The work visa allow you to work in the country. The only problem is that you have to return to your own country after the visa is expired.

There are two ways to become a citizen; one is a natural-born citizen and the other way is to apply. A natural-born citizen is anyone born in the country and if you are born outside atleast one of your parent must be a citizen that has lived in the country for 1 year. The other way is naturalization. The requirement to live in the country for five years and is 18 or older, successful completion of a citizenship exam, and the ability to read, write, and speak English. The steps are to filed an application, take a test and to take an oath. You lose your citizenship only if you swear an oath to another country, convicted of treason, and serving in the armed forces of another country at war with Trania.

The benefits are that you can vote in elections, run for office, apply for a job in the government, and you can bring family members to live here. you can also receive Social Security benefits and you can live outside the country without losind your citizenship. The drawbacks are that you must renounce your loyalty to your native country, you may lose right to vote and citizenship in your native country, and you must pass English and government/history test.

There are some trouble on immigration in the news. One is about students from Egypt bound for a college in Montana but instead fanned out across the country to visit friends and family and go sightseeing. The government tracked down the students and locked them in detention centers, teaching them about the regulations governing foreign students. There are also program that trains local police officers to determine whether criminal suspects in custody are illegal immigrants in Herdon and many illegal immigrant are afraid. Another story is about a man who was killed by illegal immigrants and that if every illegal immigrant is suspected of being a criminal , then innocent people will become victim of exclusion, harassment or mistreatment.
